ABOUT US
The Alfred M. Fiume Foundation was established in loving memory of Dr. Alfred “Fred” M. Fiume — a devoted husband, father, and friend whose life was defined by family, service, generosity, and community spirit.
Fred’s family and friends were central to his life. He frequently coached his children’s teams, delivered dental hygiene presentations in their classrooms, and even participated in a dance recital. His devotion to his wife and children was evident to all who knew him. Whenever possible, he generously offered his time and assistance to others and actively engaged in community activities. He would often be found with a video camera as he loved preserving family memories.
Fred (known to many as “Freddy” or even “Al”) graduated from Hudson Catholic Regional High School and went on to attend St. Peter’s College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1984. He then received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1988.
He built a fulfilling career as a dentist, working with Correctional Dental Associates at the New Jersey State Home for Boys and as an associate at Gentle Dental in Lyndhurst. Dedicated to his profession, he was a past member of the American Dental Association and served on the Board of the New Jersey Academy of General Dentistry.
Fred proudly served his country in the United States Army, beginning in 1988. He completed missions in Bolivia and Costa Rica and later deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He served nearly two decades in the Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, Fred’s heart was rooted in community. He was an active member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Rutherford Elks Lodge #547, a longtime member of the Lyndhurst chapter of UNICO, and a Rutherford Board of Education member from 2006 to 2012. His kindness, leadership, and commitment to others left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Fred’s sudden passing on July 29, 2015, inspired his family to continue his legacy of compassion and community service through the creation of the Alfred M. Fiume Foundation. The Foundation honors his lifelong dedication to helping others by focusing on mental wellness — providing financial assistance and support to individuals seeking mental health services and promoting initiatives that strengthen emotional well-being in the community.
Through this work, the Alfred M. Fiume Foundation continues to reflect Fred’s enduring belief in service, compassion, and the power of giving back.
